How to Build Smarter Music Promotion Campaigns with Radio Data

Most music promotion campaigns share one expensive flaw: nobody can say for certain whether they worked. Money goes out, a record goes to radio, and weeks later the answer to “did it land?” is a shrug. If you run campaigns for a label, an artist, or a roster, radio data turns that shrug into a strategy. Here’s a framework you can use on your next campaign.

Step 1 — Define the goal and KPIs before you spend a dollar

“Get spins” is not a goal. Pick something measurable: reach 25 new stations in 6 weeks, build heavy rotation in three target markets, or grow weekly spins 40% month over month. Clear KPIs tell you what to watch and when to call the campaign a win.

Step 2 — Set a baseline

You can’t measure lift without a starting point. Record where the song stands today: total spins, stations, and markets. Everything you do next gets measured against that line. A baseline also protects you from the most common campaign lie — “it’s doing great!” — by replacing it with a number.

Step 3 — Track weekly, by station and by market

Radio moves in weekly cycles, so review weekly. Two cuts of the data matter most:

  • By station — who added the record, who’s spinning it heavily, and who quietly dropped it.
  • By market — which cities and regions are responding. An airplay heat map makes this obvious at a glance.

Step 4 — Read the leading indicators

Don’t wait for the final tally. Watch the signals that predict where a record is going:

  • Rotation growth — a station moving from one spin to daily spins is a stronger signal than a new station adding it once.
  • Market clustering — when several stations in one region pick a record up together, that market is heating up.
  • Velocity — week-over-week acceleration matters more than the raw number.

Step 5 — Reallocate, then report

This is where data pays for itself. Shift budget, ads, and live dates toward the markets and records already showing traction, and cut what’s flat. Then report: a clean recap of stations, spins, markets, and movement is what keeps an artist confident and a client renewing. Real numbers beat a nice-sounding email every time.

Turn the framework into a live dashboard

This entire workflow runs on one thing: trustworthy, current airplay data. SpinCounts tracks every record across 6,700+ stations and turns it into live spin counts, market heat maps, charts, and exportable reports — so you can baseline, monitor weekly, and pull a recap in minutes instead of begging for a spreadsheet.
